Job Description

Instructional Coach

The Instructional Coach, having both content and instructional expertise, will work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning and teacher practice. The Instructional Coach will focus on individual and group professional learning that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-based effective instruction for teachers. To meet this purpose, the Instructional Coach will provide personalized, 1:1 support based on the goals and identified needs of individual teachers.

Job Goal

Utilizing current research and district data, the coach will perform a variety of tasks that provide strong educational support for teachers. Provide direct support and professional learning to school staff to assist them in creating rigorous instruction, exposing students to higher-order thinking, and consistently planning engaging lessons. Provide direct instruction to students as assigned in the master schedule.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Support grade-specific content areas, while adhering to grant requirements.
  • Support staff with topics such as student engagement, higher-level thinking and questioning, and rigorous instruction.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with teacher cohorts.
  • Work with building and district administrators and applicable school-based committees to assist in accomplishing goals and objectives and create activities.
  • Attend applicable professional conferences and workshops and turn-key information.
  • Guide teachers in leading effective data-driven conversations with students and peers.
  • Assist teachers and administrators with organizing, analyzing, and drawing actionable conclusions based on formative assessment data and classroom visits.
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement the plan, teach, and debrief model to refine best practices.
  • Conduct classroom visits in a non-evaluative supporting structure, providing feedback on lessons and model lessons.
  • Attend consultant training, grade-level meetings, building meetings, and coaching professional development.
  • Utilize current district data to drive instructional needs.
  • Assures cohesion in between consultant visitations.
  • Work with the leadership team in the creation of the school's professional development plan with specific, measurable, and attainable benchmarks for teacher and student performance.
  • Identify, design, and implement additional professional development during in-service days.
  • Performs instructional/teaching responsibilities as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the assigned supervisor.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in:
  • Assessment-driven instruction (teaching/learning process)
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus, promoting initiatives, and conveying expectations
  • Ability to design and deliver quality professional development for administrators and teachers
  • Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated strength in organization, communication skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a positive collaborative member of a team
  • Demonstrated interest and engagement in professional learning and reflection
  • Develop and implement training to adult learners
  • Any other additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications
  • Certification in specific content areas and preferred secondary
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience.
  • Current North Carolina Teaching License
  • Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina content standards.
  • Experience in research-based instructional practices.
  • Data driven results to improve teaching and learning
  • Desire to continue career improvement.
  • Previous coaching or teacher leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of positive classroom experiences
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of grade-level standards
  • Ability to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze assessment data
  • National Board Certification
  • Advanced degree from an accredited college/university
  • Eight or more years of teaching experience
  • Deep knowledge of reading, writing, literacy development, and/or math
  • Leadership experience within their field of expertise
Terms of employment

Ten (10) month position;

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NC State law and the provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified staff. Revised July 28, 2026
